Christchurch Organ - A Brief History Built in 1891 by A. Hunter & Son
About 14 years after the consecration of Christchurch the present organ was built by A. Hunter & Son of Clapham and was installed in 1891 at a cost of £450. This instrument is a valuable asset of the church and is highly regarded by many visiting organists. It is regularly maintained and certainly, in more recent years, a number of improvements have been made. The 1975 restoration included a clean and overhaul, new pedal board, repair of Trombone pipes, quietening the Tremulant action, steadying the Swell wind supply and a number of other modifications. In August 2002 the organ was completely dismantled and given it's 25 year cleaning overhaul, a 30 channel piston setter system was added. The work was funded by two legacies from the congregation. The organ has 26 speaking stops, 1502 pipes and 9 couplers. Philip J Shotton
